Something interesting happened this summer. I harvested a surprise cantaloupe crop!
An unusual cluster of vines began growing out of the bed by the back door…the one where compost had been applied to the soil before various herbs and flowers were planted.
As these vines continued to grow, I asked several of my children who planted seeds there. No one had an answer. I was skeptical. Certainly SOMEONE had planted a seed or two.
Talking with a gardening friend, it was suggested that the plants had actually come FROM the compost. Kind of like my very own mini pumpkin story.
There certainly were plenty of cantaloupe scraps tossed into the bin last year. Four more came back to us!
This summer was certainly FULL of surprising things. This was one of the sweeter surprises.
